The New Madrid earthquakes turn the river back

Three of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in North America struck this stretch of the Mississippi over three months, in a place with no fault anyone knew about. The ground liquefied and threw up sand, banks collapsed into the channel, and the river ran upstream for hours, long enough that boatmen thought it permanent. Church bells were reported ringing in Boston. The same shocks today would hit a region holding several million people.
