Surfridge is emptied and bulldozed so LAX can keep growing

Palisades del Rey was laid out on the dunes in 1921 and built up with custom beach houses, several of them owned by film people including Cecil B. DeMille, and its southern end was known as Surfridge. Jet traffic at the airport next door made the place unliveable, and in a 1965 vote two thirds of the owners took a buyout from Los Angeles while the holdouts were condemned. More than eight hundred houses came down over the following decade. The paved streets and kerbs are still there behind a fence, now a protected dune preserve for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly.
