The trap rock quarries that kept eating the southern Palisades

By the 1890s dynamite and steam crushers were taking the cliff apart for road stone, and rock was landing in people's windows on both sides of the river. The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs pushed the two states into creating the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in 1900, and J. P. Morgan paid to shut the worst of the operations at Fort Lee. The protected line ran north from there.
