Miller Woods, where the Indiana Dunes park was dedicated

Congress created Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966 after decades of argument between conservationists and the steel companies buying up the shore, and this is the ground where the new park was dedicated. Miller Woods holds the best black oak savanna left in Indiana, a habitat that has almost completely disappeared from the Midwest. The endangered Karner blue butterfly and the threatened Pitcher's thistle both live in it. It is also the only part of the park that touches the Grand Calumet River.
