Julius Sturgis was given a pretzel recipe by a tramp he had fed and turned it into the first commercial pretzel bakery in America, working out of a stone house with brick ovens. The country now eats most of its pretzels from Pennsylvania, and the state accounts for the overwhelming majority of what is made.
