Steens Mountain and the Alvord
1930
Harney County, Oregon
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A fault block tilted up 5,500 feet on one side and dropping straight off the other to a dry lakebed so flat and hard that land-speed attempts have run on it. Glacial gorges cut the western slope. The summit road is the highest in Oregon and open a few months a year.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
