St. Thomas University is a Havana university that fled Castro and reopened here
1961
Miami Gardens, north of Opa-locka, Florida
American Augustinians founded the Universidad de Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Havana in 1946. In 1961 Castro's militia took the campus and expelled the priests, jailing the administrator Edward McCarthy, who came to South Florida and opened a men's college called Biscayne on this ground that same year. It took the old Havana name back in 1984 when it added a law school, and it remains the only university in Florida sponsored by a Catholic archdiocese.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
