St. Stephan's Church, built by German carpenters, now preaching in Portuguese
1874
Ironbound, Newark, New Jersey
A congregation of German carpenters raised this Romanesque Revival church at the bend where Ferry Street meets Wilson Avenue in 1874, under the name St. Stephan's German United Evangelical. Services ran in German until 1960. As the Ironbound filled with Portuguese and then Brazilian families the same building switched to Portuguese and Spanish, so three waves of the neighbourhood have used one set of pews.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
