St. Charles Hospital, built by nuns the Kulturkampf drove out of Germany

The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart came to the United States in 1876 after Bismarck's campaign against German Catholics, founded a hospital in Joliet, then bought a house in Aurora in 1900 and opened St. Charles in it. They replaced it in 1932 with this 110 bed Art Deco block, built for $500,000 by a contractor the Chicago Tribune praised for hiring local men through the Depression. It later ran as a nursing home and sanatorium until the state pulled its licence in 2010.
