St. Bernard Unified opens as one school for a drowned parish
2005
Chalmette, Louisiana
Every school in St. Bernard Parish flooded when the levees failed in August 2005. The parish school board put kindergarten through twelfth grade into the old Chalmette High building and opened in mid November, the first school anywhere in the flood zone to take students back. It ran as a single unified school for one year before the parish separated the grades again.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
