Nunez becomes the first Louisiana public college named for a woman
1992
Chalmette, Louisiana
The 1992 legislature folded a technical institute and a parish two year college into one campus on Paris Road and named it for Elaine P. Nunez, a lifelong St. Bernard resident and the wife of the state Senate president. No public college in Louisiana had carried a woman's name before. Katrina put more than seven feet of water through the ground floor of every building on the campus in August 2005, and classes resumed here the following January while most of the parish was still gutted.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
