Through late June 1964 mixed groups of swimmers walked into the surf near the pier here, at a beach St. Johns County kept white only while Black families were sent down the island to Butler Beach. White crowds followed them into the water and beat them there, and Florida Highway Patrol troopers waded in to break up the demonstrations while the arrests fell on the marchers. Andrew Young, C.T. Vivian and Hosea Williams were among the organisers jailed in St. Augustine that month. The Civil Rights Act, which ended the segregation being enforced on this sand, was signed on 2 July.
