Butler Beach, the coast Frank Butler opened to Black Floridians
1927
Anastasia Island, St. Johns County, Florida
Frank B. Butler ran a grocery in Lincolnville and from 1927 bought undeveloped land on Anastasia Island between the Matanzas River and the ocean. Segregation closed every other beach in St. Johns County to Black residents, so he built his own, with a bathhouse, a restaurant, carnival rides and a subdivision behind them. For decades it was the only sand open to Black Floridians between Daytona Beach and American Beach north of Jacksonville. The county took the park over in 1980 on the condition that it keep his name.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
