The Biloxi wade-ins

Twenty-six miles of Mississippi beach had been built with public money and was closed to Black residents. Gilbert Mason, a local doctor, led small groups onto the sand three times between 1959 and 1963. On 24 April 1960 a mob attacked the waders with clubs and chains while police watched, and shooting went on into the night. It is among the earliest sustained direct-action campaigns of the movement, and one of the least known.
