The Navy put a hospital on the St. Albans golf course in 1943 to take sailors and Marines coming home wounded, building it fast out of roughly a thousand wooden structures. It was one of nine naval hospitals of its kind and finished the war carrying the largest patient load of any of them. The Navy left in 1974 and gave the land to the city in 1977. The park on the site was named for the NAACP leader Roy Wilkins in 1982.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
