Chelsea Naval Hospital, one of the first three the Navy ever built
1836
Chelsea, Massachusetts
Congress authorised three naval hospitals and this granite building on the Mystic River bluff was commissioned in January 1836 with a hundred beds. It took in wounded Union sailors and Marines through the Civil War, gained a west wing in 1865, and kept working through the Spanish American War and both world wars. John Quincy Adams was treated here after his presidency and John F. Kennedy before his. It closed in 1974 when the Boston Navy Yard shut down.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
