Methuen Water Works, the town's first big public project

Methuen had run on the Spicket River since the 1820s, its falls turning cotton, hat and shoe works, but the town had no public water supply until this station went up in 1893. Ernest N. Boyden designed it in a heavy Romanesque style more often given to churches and libraries than to pumping machinery. It was listed on the National Register in 1984 and the city water department still keeps offices in it.
