Social Security moves its headquarters to Woodlawn
1960
Woodlawn, Maryland
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Social Security ran the national retirement system out of Baltimore's Candler Building from 1936, a stay meant to last six months that ran 24 years after the War Department seized its Washington building in 1941. In January 1960 the agency and its 5,300 staff moved to a new campus in this Baltimore County suburb. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services headquarters sits alongside it, and locals still call the area Security.
