Smokey Bear of Capitan

Firefighters pulled a badly burned black bear cub from a tree after the Capitan Gap fire in 1950, and the ad campaign symbol that had existed only as a poster since 1944 suddenly had a living body. Smokey lived at the National Zoo for twenty six years, received so much mail he was issued his own zip code, and was flown home to Capitan for burial when he died. The historical park holds his grave, and the town's whole main street answers to him.
