Sewickley Academy closed when its Southern boys went home to fight
1838
Sewickley, PA
Founded in 1838 as a boys' school in a brick house on Beaver Road, this is the oldest independent school in western Pennsylvania. Its boarders came from Virginia and as far as New Orleans, and the Civil War emptied it: Southern students went home, teachers and older boys enlisted, and the school shut. It reopened in 1865 as a day school and went coeducational by the 1920s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
