Packer Collegiate Institute rises from the Brooklyn Female Academy fire
1845
Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, New York

A committee of Brooklynites opened the Brooklyn Female Academy on Joralemon Street in 1845, and within a few years it was teaching 350 girls drawn from nineteen states. The building burned to the ground on New Year's Day 1853. Harriet Packer, widow of a former trustee, put up $65,000 to rebuild it, the largest gift to American secondary education at the time, on condition that the old corporation be dissolved. It reopened in 1854 under her husband's name and has never left the block.
