Seth Boyden, the blacksmith who made Newark

Seth Boyden arrived from Massachusetts in 1815 and by 1818 had worked out how to make patent leather, which turned Newark into the leather town of the United States and paid for a good deal of the city that followed. In 1826 he became the first American to produce malleable cast iron. He also built a steam locomotive, built a steamboat and bred a large strawberry, and Edison later called him one of the country's great inventors.
