Sawpit Bluff, where the second invasion of Florida fell apart

In May 1777 Continental troops under Samuel Elbert waited here at the mouth of Sawpit Creek, opposite the south end of Amelia Island, for mounted militia coming down from Sunbury in Georgia. It was the second American attempt to take British East Florida. The militia never arrived, the expedition was called off, and Florida stayed British through the war. A plantation later worked the bluff under Spanish rule as Barranco de Aserradero, and the settlement is gone.
