Sarah Lawrence College opens as a women's college
1926
Yonkers, New York
William Van Duzer Lawrence founded the college on his Yonkers land in 1926 and named it for his wife. It was built on the progressive model: small seminars and a regular one to one conference between each student and each teacher, rather than lecture halls. Men were admitted from 1968, and the campus still keeps a Bronxville mailing address despite standing in Yonkers.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
