Allen, Texas

On 22 February 1878 Sam Bass and five other men held up a southbound Houston and Texas Central passenger train while it stood at the Allen depot, taking roughly $1,300, most of it in silver coin. It was the first train robbery in the history of Texas. The take was small but the method worked, and Bass repeated it three more times within fifty days and twenty miles before he was ambushed at Round Rock that July.
