Atchison Village, the shipyard housing its tenants bought from the government
1941
Richmond, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Roosevelt approved the money for 450 units here in June 1941, the first war housing built in Richmond, thrown up quickly for people arriving to work in the Kaiser shipyards. Almost every project like it was demolished once the war ended. The residents instead bought this one from the federal government in February 1957 for just over 1.5 million dollars, and it is still run as a housing cooperative by the people who live in it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
