Robert E. Lee High School keeps its name after an eight hour meeting
1928
Baytown, Texas
The school opened in 1928 as Baytown's white high school under segregation, named for the Confederate commander. Black students were not admitted until the autumn of 1967. In September 2020, after a board meeting that ran more than eight and a half hours, trustees voted four to three against renaming it, and a committee formed that autumn later reported that most people who answered its survey wanted the name kept. The building is a recorded Texas historic landmark.
