Robbins Reef Light, kept for 33 years by Kate Walker
1883
Robbins Reef, off Constable Hook, Bayonne, New Jersey

Kate Walker took over this cast iron sparkplug tower off Bayonne when her husband died in 1886 and tended the light and the foghorn until 1919, raising two children out on the reef. She is credited with pulling about fifty people from the water, mostly fishermen blown onto the rocks in sudden weather. A Coast Guard buoy tender named for her is based within sight of the light.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
