Rifle Camp Park, named for the riflemen who watched from the ridge
1780
Woodland Park and Clifton, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The name comes from Major James Parr's rifle corps, the unit Daniel Morgan had raised, which camped near the Great Notch just south of this ground. Washington twice put the Continental Army behind these Watchung ridges in 1780, through July and again from October into late November, using the high ground to watch British movement in the valley below. Passaic County runs the ridgetop as a park now, with a nature centre and an astronomical observatory on it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
