McDowell Grove, from Civilian Conservation Corps camp to secret radar school
1942
Naperville, Illinois
The Civilian Conservation Corps ran a camp on this bend of the West Branch of the DuPage River from 1934, about 200 men at a time, and they dredged the lagoon and built the bridges and a limestone dam. After Pearl Harbor the Army Signal Corps took the camp over and trained civilian students on live radar equipment there. When the radar school closed in 1943 the Office of Strategic Services moved in and taught recruits to send and receive coded messages on field radios, apparently under cover of the old school's name.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
