Return Day, when Delaware buries the hatchet

Two days after every general election the county gathers in Georgetown, the results are read from the courthouse balcony by the town crier, winners and losers ride the same carriage, and the party chairmen bury a hatchet in a box of sand from Lewes. It has run since the 1790s, when voters had to travel to Georgetown to vote and came back to hear the count.
