Born here and raised across the state line in Greenville, Florida. He watched his younger brother drown, began losing his sight not long after, and was blind by seven. At the school for the deaf and blind in St. Augustine he learned to read and write music in braille, one hand at a time. There is a bronze of him at a piano on the riverfront, and the fountain around it plays.
