William Hadley was a Chicago high school teacher who lost his sight at 55 and found there was almost nothing on offer for blind adults who wanted to learn. In 1920 he began teaching braille by correspondence, sending the lessons out through the mail and charging nothing for them. The organization still runs from Winnetka, now by phone, app and website, and it is still free.
