Radburn, the town built for the motor age

Clarence Stein and Henry Wright laid out Radburn in 1929 as an answer to the car, with Marjorie Sewell Cautley designing the planting. Houses turn their backs on the road and face interior parks, footpaths cross the streets by underpass rather than at grade, and the plan put the residential superblock and some of the country's earliest cul de sacs into general use. The Depression bankrupted the City Housing Corporation in 1933 and the place never reached the twenty five thousand residents it was drawn for, reaching about five thousand by 1964.
