Downtown Chelsea's residential blocks rise around the Shurtleff School
Chelsea, Massachusetts

This district had held City Hall and much of Chelsea's community life until the 1908 fire took all of it. The Shurtleff School, built in 1909 across an entire city block, went up first and pulled housing back around it. The result is a neighbourhood laid out around a school rather than a town square.
