Queens Center, the most profitable mall per square foot in America
1973
Elmhurst, Queens, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The mall opened on Queens Boulevard on September 12, 1973, on ground that had held a children's amusement park called Fairyland. Land in Elmhurst was expensive, so it was built small and stacked upward rather than spread across a parking sea, and most shoppers arrive on foot or by subway. By 2002 it was turning roughly 953 dollars in sales per square foot, close to triple the national average, and it has repeatedly ranked first in the country by that measure.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
