Port Arthur's clubwomen build themselves a headquarters
1924
Lakeshore Drive, Port Arthur, Texas

The federated women's clubs of Port Arthur go back to the town's founding, and in 1924 they put up a permanent building of their own in Lakeshore Park, designed by the local architect Charles Wignall. In a company town run by refineries, the clubwomen did the civic work nobody else was doing: libraries, parks, public health, schools. The building has served as their headquarters ever since and went on the National Register in 1985.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
