The National Farmers Union, then one of the largest farm organisations in the country, moved its headquarters to a spot on the rail line south of Atlanta. Charles Simon Barrett, the union's national president, and Drewry Arthur Carmichael, who supplied the land, got a charter signed for the new town on 17 August 1908. The name is the union's.
