Plunkett Town is erased by the airport next door

About 1,800 Black residents lived in Plunkett Town in 1969, in a settlement across the tracks from the plants and beside the airport, with no sewers, no paved streets, no mail service and in places no running water. Airport expansion through the 1970s took the land, and by the early 1980s the houses were gone and air freight warehouses stood where the streets had been. Gilbert Cemetery, in use since 1841, still holds many of the people who lived here.
