Centreville, where the sewers backed up for decades
2021
Centreville, Illinois
Centreville sat on low ground east of the river, mostly Black and mostly working class, and for years its residents lived with chronic flooding and raw sewage in their yards and streets. Residents and advocates traced it to disinvestment, redlining and neglect by the local and state bodies meant to keep the system running. The city dissolved into Cahokia Heights on 6 May 2021 carrying some of the highest poverty rates in Illinois.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
