Brooklyn, the Black district urban renewal erased
1960
Second Ward, Charlotte
Urban renewal took 1,480 buildings out of Charlotte's largest Black neighbourhood, a self-contained district with its own hospital, library, hotels and business street. About 1,000 families were displaced, little of the promised replacement housing was built, and almost nothing of Brooklyn stands.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
