Plaza México, a Mexican town square built by two Korean brothers
2002
Lynwood, California
Min and Donald Chae ran the swap meet on this 25 acre site, the grounds of a former Montgomery Ward, and their customers were almost entirely Mexican. When no department store would anchor a redevelopment they financed one themselves, opening Plaza México in 2002 as a composite of town squares from across Mexico rather than as a shopping mall. Its half scale copy of the Angel of Independence was made in Mexico City at La Esmeralda, the national art school, worked up from archive records of the original.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
