The Paterson and New York Plank Road company took its charter on 14 March 1851 to floor an existing colonial route with wooden boards laid edge to edge, so wheels crossing the Hackensack meadows would ride on timber instead of sinking into mud. Tolls paid for it. New Jersey and New York laid over 3,500 miles of plank road in roughly a decade before the boards rotted and the boom collapsed. Route 3 took the traffic, and the road still carries the name in every town it passes.
