Palisades Amusement Park on top of the cliffs
1898
Cliffside Park and Fort Lee, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A trolley company opened a picnic ground on the cliff edge in 1898 and it grew into the park that New York looked across at for seventy years. From 1912 it had a salt water pool six hundred feet long with pontoons underneath to make waves, filled from the Hudson. Chuck Barris wrote a song about it that Freddy Cannon took up the charts in 1962, and attendance peaked around ten million in 1969. The land was worth more as apartments and the park shut for good on September 12, 1971.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
