Eldorado, the pleasure ground on top of the Palisades
1891
Eldorado Place, Weehawken, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Hungarian showman Bolossy Kiralfy laid out 25 acres on the cliff top with a Moorish casino, a mock Rhenish castle at the edge, a thirty foot fountain and an amphitheatre seating eight thousand. Visitors came up from the river in a 150 foot elevator and crossed to the gate on a trestle railway. It ran as an amusement ground only from 1891 to 1894, and fire took the casino on 4 November 1898. A street named Eldorado Place is what the site kept.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
