This girls' boarding school opened on the hill above Ellicott City in 1837 and took students aged twelve to eighteen. Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps took charge in 1841 and built a course heavy in natural history, mathematics and the sciences, with the stated aim that graduates could support themselves by teaching. The school closed in 1891 and its roofless stone shell now hosts outdoor Shakespeare.
