Pacific City, the Coney Island of the West that lasted two summers

Promoters leased about ninety acres of shoreline from the Howard family and opened Pacific City on 1 July 1922, with trucked-in sand, a 3,200 foot boardwalk, a pier, a roller coaster called the Comet and a maple dance floor advertised as the largest in the west. Close to a million people came in the first year. It closed in 1924, beaten by cold bay wind and the smell off the sewage outfalls nearby. The eucalyptus point is now a county park with a junior science museum, a marina and a beach.
