Bergen Beach, the resort a chewing gum fortune built on an island
1896

Percy Williams and the chewing gum manufacturer Thomas Adams Jr. Bought part of what was then Bergen Island and opened a resort there in June 1896, reached by a five cent trolley down Flatbush Avenue. It had a casino, a vaudeville theatre, a roller skating rink and a boardwalk, and it was aimed at a wealthier crowd than Coney Island drew. It closed in 1918, the same year the island was finally joined to the mainland.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
