The city spent the 1930s and 1940s filling this salt marsh to make a shorefront park, tying an offshore point back to the mainland with about fifteen million cubic yards of waste fill. It was handed to the National Park Service in 1972. A radiological survey in 2005 found radium in the ground, and large sections of the park have been fenced off for cleanup ever since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
