One of America's first purpose built mosques opens in Highland Park, and closes within five years
1921
Highland Park, Michigan
Mohammed Karoub came from Damascus around 1912, took a job at the Ford plant, made money in real estate and paid for a mosque near the factory that had drawn him. It opened on Victor Street in June 1921 and served Muslim autoworkers pulled in by the five dollar day. Within a year the congregation was thinning as Syrian families followed Ford to the Rouge in Dearborn, and the building was sold to the city in 1926.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
